1. Please can you tell me a bit about yourself and why you decided to create Climate Trees.

Hi, my name is Claud McDougall: I am 21 years old and I have just finished university at Nottingham Trent studying business management and marketing.

"I decided to create Climate Trees because the climate crisis that the world is currently facing is scary and there is a need for climate action."

2. What is Climate Trees?

Climate Trees is a carbon offsetting service that plants trees in the UK.

The aim is to tackle the climate crisis that the world is facing and contribute in slowing and reversing global warming. One of the main reasons for climate change is due the extremely high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, also known as greenhouse gases. Trees absorb this carbon through photosynthesis and covert it to oxygen.

Climate Trees gives individuals the opportunity to plant a tree as a unique and sustainable life-long gift or to offset their personal carbon footprint. We use an eGifting service which allows customers to send anyone a tree wherever they are by email or text. Climate Trees for businesses allows organisations to become carbon neutral by offsetting their carbon emitting operations and improve their brand image.

3. What does Climate Trees aim to achieve in terms of climate change?

Climate Trees aims to bring attention to the issue of climate change and the ease of climate action. Since the UK government failed to meet its tree-planting targets by 71% in 2018, Climate Trees aims to make its own impact and contribution to helping the UK become carbon neutral by 2050.

4. How did you find the process of creating your own business?

Since coronavirus I have had a lot of time on my hands, and since I have finished University I have had all the help and support needed to plan and develop the initial idea. It’s been fun to finally put into practice all the theory I have learnt.

5. How much are the trees?

We currently offer six UK native trees, Oak, Maple, Rowan, Silver Birch, Field Maple and Hazel. Each individual tree is £14.95, this covers the cost of the sapling, maintenance, a sustainable tree guard and bamboo stick.

6. Where will the trees be planted?

Currently the Trees are being planting in the UK only, in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire.

7. Do buyers receive pictures/updates of their tree?

Yes, with each tree purchased the customers receive a geo-location of their tree, a picture and continuous updates.

8. Can customers visit their tree?

Yes, of course. The geo-locating service allows customers to know the exact place that their tree is located.

9. What are your plans for the future of Climate Trees?

"The future for Climate Trees is to plant thousands of trees, the UK needs to plant roughly 1.5 billion trees by 2050. The UK is also significantly behind the European average of 35% of tree and woodland coverage with just 12.9%. Additionally, to keep raising awareness of the crisis that the world is currently facing and to persuade everyone to do their bit to give back to the environment."

10. Have you got any additional plans to diversify Climate Trees to further support climate change?

Yes we’ve got lots. Watch this space.
